Binta and the Great Idea

Recently I have become a fan of things short.
Short Stories
Short Poems
Short Movies
Short People
I never put much stock into shortness, thinking these smaller texts were created by those who could not complete the full-on-epic. I thought the emotional punch and creative juices present in little works could not compare to the lengthy masterful conglomerates.
I was wrong, very wrong.
Those Shorts Sure Shine

I was introduced to this movie a couple of weeks ago and its worth sharing. It is called Binta and the Great Idea and it was nominated for an Oscar in 2007, in that category called "Best Short Film: Live Action", you know the one we always groan at because it is holding us back from seeing Clint Eastwood or Penelope Cruise hold up the "real awards".

Binta is beautiful girl from Senegal, Africa, whose father has a great idea. As the only literate in her family Binta must help him write his idea down and pass it along throughout Africa.

Watch this 31 minute film. You will not regret the short amount of time you took out of your day to visit Binta in Senegal.

Swimming Next To Whales

It has to be the coolest feeling to swim next to a whale.
To be connected to something so massive
To float through the ocean with its oldest master
To be pulled by the tide of a Baleen

Whales are the memory keepers
Who hold with them centuries of secrets
That they've collected from their excursions around the world's seas
As we swim she'd whisper them in my ear
Gently as to not spoil it for the rest

Together we could move around the globe
Her fins displacing tons of water
Her tail creating heavy waves
Her regal presence known for miles
A silent dinosaur swimming right besides me
